Hornek’s Nerdy Wedding
I absolutely love when I get a couple who isn’t afraid to show the world not only the love they have for each other, but also show everyone their passions and personalities. I meet Jennifer and Danny back in May of 2017, and they came to me with a pretty big idea. As a couple they found themselves torn between choosing a theme for their wedding.
Now, I fully believe that your wedding day should be everything you want it to be and more. Jennifer was afraid if they used all their favorite fandoms for their wedding that it would look too eclectic. So we set up a meeting at Starbucks and wrote down all of the themes they wanted to include in their special day. Before we knew it the clock said it was 2 hours later. Now that we had ideas I invited them out to the shop so they could see my inventory.
On their next visit we were ready to get down to business. We went through each fandom they wanted to include and we ended up with 6 themes. Each table would be it’s own theme with a different centerpiece. To say we were all excited would be an understatement. After 3 hours of seeing my ideas they hired me as their day of designer and the giddy nerd in me leapt with excitement.
Here are the themes we decided on:
Harry Potter
Comic Book
Disney
Star Wars
Steven Universe
Mario
I checked in with them regularly over the next few months and gave them more ideas. Finally a month before the wedding we had one last meeting to make sure our plan was solid. I never cared that our meetings were usually 2 hours or more because we got off topic and started talking about our nerdyness. I love getting to know my clients and these two definitely made the hours fly by.
Finally the big day was here! It took them 3 vehicles to transport all the things they rented from me! I could see the excitement in their eyes that their nerdy wedding was becoming a reality. With a final check through the inventory they were on their way.
Since I was their Day of Designer I arrived 5 hours before the ceremony. I had a lot to do before guests started arriving. I think my favorite table to set up was the Little Mermaid table. The couple had sand, shells, and starfish from one of their vacations that I placed throughout the table. Here are pictures of how it turned out!
So each theme had 2-3 tables, and I made centerpieces for each table. I would say that was the most challenging part of it, and it really forced my creativity to come out. Not that I am not always creative, but most brides want each centerpiece to look the same or similar. With 6 different themes and each theme having multiple tables it was certainly a challenge…….but I loved every minute of it. Here are the other tables I put together.
Disney
Star Wars
Mario
Steven Universe
Comic Book
Harry Potter
When I was done decorating it was bitter sweet. All the planning, drawing, stories, laughs, and late nights were over. I would see them when they dropped off their items the next day sure, but my journey with them was over. However, the smiles on their faces before I left made it all worth it.
I can only hope I get to meet another couple as nerdy and fun as Jennifer and Danny. To all future brides and grooms don’t be afraid to be like Jennifer & Danny. Don’t worry about what your guests will think. It is your special day and if you want to have 6 different themes for your tables just know I can make it happen and still make it look geek chic!
